A power wheelchair only helps if the user can actually tell it where to go. The drive control is the interface between the person and the machine — the part they touch, move, or activate to make the chair start, steer, stop, and adjust its seat. Getting this right is as important as the chair itself, because a person with very limited movement may still drive beautifully with the correct control matched to whatever they can reliably do.

The standard control is a hand joystick: push it the way you want to go, harder for faster. But many users cannot use a hand, so there is a whole family of alternative access methods. A head array uses pads behind and beside the head that the user presses with head movements; a sip-and-puff system is driven by sucking or blowing on a straw in soft and hard patterns that the chair reads as commands; chin joysticks, foot controls, and tiny touch switches placed wherever a person has reliable movement are all used. The same controls also operate powered seat functions like tilt and recline. Power-assist sits in between worlds: it adds small motors to a manual chair so each hand push goes further, helping a user who can still push but needs to spare their shoulders.

Matching the access method is delicate clinical work. The clinician looks for a movement the person can make consistently, accurately, and without tiring or triggering muscle spasm, then builds the control around it — and reassesses as the person's condition changes. The driving itself must be trained and tested for safety, because a power chair is a powerful machine in shared spaces. The principle to remember is that the goal is reliable, safe control, not the most sophisticated technology; the simplest access method the person can master well is usually the best one.
