mobility scooter
A mobility scooter is the open, motorised three- or four-wheeled device you often see at shopping centres, with a seat, a flat floor for the feet, and handlebars at the front. It is designed for someone who can still walk a little and sit upright with good trunk control, but who tires quickly or cannot manage longer distances — to extend their range out in the community.
Unlike a power wheelchair, which the user drives from within a full seating system, a scooter is steered by a tiller — handlebars connected to the front wheel, much like a bicycle or a small motorbike. The user must be able to grip and turn it, see well, and step on and off the seat. Because of the long platform and front-wheel steering, scooters turn in a wide arc and are harder to manoeuvre in tight indoor spaces, which is why they suit outdoor errands and large flat venues more than cramped homes.
It is important not to confuse a scooter with a power wheelchair. A scooter offers little postural support — its captain's-style seat does not hold a weak or asymmetric body upright — and it cannot carry the cushions, custom backrests, or powered tilt that someone with significant disability needs. Choosing a scooter for a person who actually requires those supports is a classic mismatch: it may seem cheaper and more 'normal', but it can leave them sitting badly, at risk of pressure injury, and unable to get into their own bathroom. The scooter is the right tool only for someone whose needs genuinely fit it.
A man with heart failure can walk around his house but is exhausted by a trip to the market; a four-wheel mobility scooter lets him do his own shopping again, while he still walks the short distances at home.
A scooter extends range for someone with good trunk control and short-distance walking, not for those needing seating support.
A scooter is not a substitute for a power wheelchair: it provides almost no postural support and cannot carry the seating system a person with significant disability needs.
