tilt-in-space and recline

For someone who cannot reposition themselves and sits all day, staying frozen in one upright posture is exhausting and dangerous to the skin. Two seating functions let the chair move the body for them. Tilt-in-space rotates the whole seat and back together as one rigid unit, like tipping a chair backward without changing the angle between the seat and the back — so the person's hips, knees, and trunk stay in exactly the same relationship while the body leans back. Recline instead opens up the angle between the seat and the back, so the backrest lies down while the seat stays put, like leaning back in a reclining armchair.

Because they move the body differently, they do different jobs. Tilt-in-space is the workhorse for pressure relief and posture: tilting backward transfers weight off the sitting bones and onto the back and head, gives the skin a rest, helps a tired trunk that is sliding down stay positioned, and can calm dizziness from low blood pressure. Crucially, tilt keeps the hips bent at the same angle, so it does not stretch tight muscles or invite the body to slide. Recline opens the hips and is useful for stretching out the legs, easing into a rest position, catheter care, and managing breathing — but opening the angle tends to cause the body to slide forward against the backrest, which can drag (shear) the skin. The two are often built into the same chair and used together.

These functions are a major reason a powered seating system can be worth its cost: they let a person who cannot lift themselves still shift their weight many times a day, keep a good posture as fatigue sets in, and rest without leaving the chair. The honest point to grasp is that tilt and recline are not interchangeable. Reclining to relieve pressure can backfire by causing shear, while tilt avoids that — so the choice between them is a real clinical decision, not just personal preference, and many users need both for different moments of the day.

Every half hour a power-chair user activates tilt-in-space to lean the whole seat back forty-five degrees for a couple of minutes, lifting the load off his sitting bones without his hips changing angle or his body sliding.

Tilt and recline are not interchangeable: recline can drag (shear) the skin as the body slides, while tilt avoids that — choosing between them is a clinical decision, not a preference.
