It is tempting to think that picking assistive technology is just choosing a gadget from a catalogue. In reality, the most expensive, most advanced device is useless if it does not fit the person who must live with it. The assistive technology assessment is the structured process of working out what a person actually needs, can use, and will keep using — and only then matching them to a device, rather than the other way around.
A good assessment looks at four things together, not just the equipment. It looks at the person (their abilities, vision, hearing, thinking, physical control, preferences, and goals), the tasks they want to do, the environments where it must work (home, school, work, outdoors), and only then the technology. A team — often including an occupational therapist, a speech-language pathologist, a rehabilitation engineer, the person, and their family — tries devices out, sometimes lends them for a trial at home, and revisits the choice as needs change. A child who outgrows a device, an adult whose disease progresses, a person who moves house: each may need the assessment repeated.
This matters because assistive technology abandonment is strikingly common — a large share of provided devices end up unused in a drawer, usually because they were chosen without truly involving the person, did not fit the real environment, were too hard to use, or were never properly set up and supported. The whole point of the assessment is to prevent that waste: to start from the person and the task, not the product. A modest aid the person chose, can operate, and wants to use beats a sophisticated one imposed on them every time.
Before recommending a communication device for a teenager, the team assesses her vision, hand control, the demands of her classroom, and what she most wants to say. They trial two systems at home for a fortnight, and she chooses the simpler one she finds easy and is glad to use — rather than the fancier device that overwhelmed her.
Start from the person, the task, and the environment — then match the device, not the reverse.
Abandonment is the dominant failure of assistive technology: a large share of devices end up unused. The fix is to start from the person and the real task, involve them in the choice, and support the setup — not to pick the most advanced gadget.
