Think of the laminated checklist taped beside a coffee machine in a chain café, so that every barista, in any city, makes the same drink the same way. A standard operating procedure is the lab's version: a written, step-by-step recipe so detailed that anyone trained on it will run the method exactly the same way every time.

A standard operating procedure is an approved, controlled document that spells out precisely how to perform a routine task — which reagents, what equipment, each step in order, the conditions to hold, how to record results, and what to do if something goes wrong. It is dated, version-controlled and signed off, so the lab always knows which version is the current authority.

It matters because consistency is the foundation of reliable, comparable results: people forget, improvise and drift, but a clear written procedure keeps everyone aligned and lets a new analyst reproduce the method faithfully. The caveat is that a standard operating procedure is only as good as it is followed and kept current — an outdated or ignored document gives a false sense of control.

The standard operating procedure for measuring water pH specifies the exact buffers for daily calibration, the electrode soak time, the stirring speed, the temperature to record, and how many decimal places to report — so any analyst's reading can be trusted and compared.
