A recipe tells you, in general, how to make bread: the ingredients, the steps, the technique. An analytical method is the recipe for an analysis. It describes the overall approach and principle used to identify or measure an analyte — for example 'titration', 'spectrophotometry', or 'gas chromatography' — the broad strategy before you fill in every last detail.

An analytical method is the set of techniques and principles applied to determine a particular analyte in a particular kind of sample. It sits at a middle level: more general than a step-by-step procedure (the exact instructions), but more concrete than the discipline as a whole. A single method can be written up as many slightly different procedures.

It matters because choosing the right method shapes everything that follows: cost, speed, the smallest amount you can detect, and how vulnerable you are to interferents. The caveat is that no method is universally best — a method excellent for trace metals in water may be useless for fats in food, so methods are chosen to fit the analyte, the matrix, and the question being asked.

To find how much vitamin C is in juice, an analyst might choose a titration method, a spectrophotometric method, or a chromatographic method. Each is a different analytical method aimed at the same analyte.

A method is the overall approach; many procedures can implement it.

Keep 'method' and 'procedure' distinct: the method is the general principle (e.g. titration), the procedure is the exact, written, step-by-step recipe that puts that method to work on a specific sample.
