parturition

Parturition is the medical word for the whole process of giving birth, the carefully timed transition from carrying a baby to delivering one. It is less a single switch than a gradual changeover, like an orchestra building from quiet to crescendo as many hormonal and mechanical players come in on cue.

The hormonal stage is set by a shift in the balance of pregnancy hormones. The strong contraction-suppressing influence of progesterone wanes (functionally, in humans), while estrogen's effects rise, making the uterine muscle more excitable and increasing its sensitivity to oxytocin. Locally produced prostaglandins ripen the cervix and stimulate the muscle, and oxytocin then drives the powerful, coordinated contractions of labor.

A defining feature is positive feedback: as the baby's head presses on the cervix, stretch signals travel to the brain, more oxytocin is released, contractions intensify, the head presses harder, and the cycle escalates until birth. This self-amplifying loop is one of the body's clearest examples of positive feedback.

An honest caveat: the exact trigger that initiates human labor is still not fully understood. Unlike some animals, humans do not show a simple drop in circulating progesterone, and birth timing is influenced by fetal, placental and maternal signals that researchers are still working to disentangle.
