Oxytocin is best known as the hormone of birth and breastfeeding, a chemical squeeze signal. When the body needs muscle to contract in just the right rhythm, to push a baby out or to eject milk, oxytocin is the messenger that says “squeeze now.”
It is a small peptide made in the hypothalamus and released from the posterior pituitary into the bloodstream. During labor it stimulates the smooth muscle of the uterus to contract, and after birth it triggers the milk let-down reflex by squeezing the tiny muscle cells around the milk-producing alveoli. Both processes use positive feedback: a stimulus (cervical stretch, or suckling) leads to more oxytocin, which strengthens the response.
Oxytocin also acts in the brain, where it influences social bonding, trust and maternal behavior, which is why it is sometimes loosely called the “bonding hormone.” A synthetic form is widely used in medicine to induce or augment labor and to control bleeding after delivery.
A caveat: the popular image of oxytocin as a simple “love hormone” oversimplifies a complex molecule. Its behavioral effects in humans are context-dependent and far from fully understood, and headlines about oxytocin sprays improving relationships should be read with caution.
Oxytocin and vasopressin are closely related nine-amino-acid peptides made by magnocellular neurons and released from the posterior pituitary; they differ by only two amino acids yet have very different main actions.
