Micromeritics is the science of small particles. Think of a bag of sugar: whether it pours smoothly, packs tightly, or dissolves quickly in your tea depends not just on what it is made of but on how big the grains are, how varied they are, and what shape they take. Micromeritics is the study of exactly those properties for powders used in medicines.
More formally, micromeritics deals with the fundamental and derived properties of single particles and of powder beds: particle size and its distribution, shape, surface area, density, porosity, and flow. These properties are not laboratory curiosities; they govern how a powder behaves on a manufacturing line.
In pharmaceutical practice, micromeritic properties influence drug dissolution and absorption (smaller particles dissolve faster), powder flow into a tablet press or capsule filler, content uniformity of the finished dose, and even the feel of a cream on the skin. Because nearly every solid medicine begins as a powder, micromeritics underpins much of dosage-form design.
A caveat: real powders are messy. Particles are rarely perfect spheres, and a single number such as an average size always hides variation. Good micromeritics is as much about choosing the right measurement and reporting the spread as it is about quoting one tidy value.
The term comes from the work of J. M. Dalla Valle in the 1940s, who coined micromeritics for the technology of fine particles. In pharmacy it is the bridge between solid-state chemistry and the physical handling of powders.
