specific surface area

Specific surface area is how much surface a powder packs into each gram (or each unit volume) of material. Picture cutting a sugar cube into ever smaller crumbs: the total amount of sugar is unchanged, but the exposed surface grows enormously. A powder with a high specific surface area is finely divided and exposes a great deal of its substance to the surrounding liquid or air.

It is usually expressed in square metres per gram. For a given mass, surface area rises as particle size falls, and it rises further if the particles are porous or rough rather than smooth spheres. This is why micronized and porous powders can have surprisingly large areas.

Surface area drives surface-dependent processes. Dissolution rate is proportional to the area in contact with the solvent, so a high specific surface area speeds the dissolution of poorly soluble drugs. It also affects adsorption of moisture or other molecules, reactivity, and the amount of lubricant or binder a powder needs.

Two common ways to measure it give different numbers and answer different questions. Gas adsorption (the BET method) measures the true area including internal pores and is sensitive to fine detail, while permeametry, which infers area from how easily air flows through a packed bed, gives a coarser external area. The right method depends on what the surface area is being used to predict.
