powder flow
Powder flow is how readily a powder moves and pours, the way fine dry sand streams smoothly from your hand while damp clay just clumps and sticks. In a factory this everyday difference decides whether material slides freely from hoppers into the cavities of a tablet press or capsule filler, or jams and bridges instead.
Flow is governed by the balance between the forces pulling particles apart (gravity, momentum) and those making them stick together (van der Waals attraction, electrostatic charge, moisture bridges, mechanical interlocking of rough shapes). Larger, rounder, denser, drier particles generally flow well; very fine, irregular, or moist powders are cohesive and flow poorly.
Why it matters in pharmacy comes down to dose accuracy. A tablet press fills each die by volume in a fraction of a second, so if the powder does not flow uniformly the dies fill unevenly and tablet weight and drug content vary. Good flow is therefore essential to content uniformity and to high-speed manufacturing.
Flow is assessed by several complementary measures, the angle of repose, Carr's index, the Hausner ratio, flow through an orifice, and shear-cell testing, because no single test captures it fully. When flow is inadequate, formulators add a glidant, granulate the powder to build larger free-flowing aggregates, or adjust particle size and humidity.
