If you wanted to describe what makes a wolf a wolf rather than a dog, you might list a handful of shared traits: hunts in packs, howls, lives wild. Cancer researchers did the same thing for tumors. Even though there are over a hundred kinds of cancer, scientists noticed that almost all of them share a small set of acquired abilities — a checklist of capabilities a normal cell must gain, step by step, to become a dangerous, growing tumor. This checklist is called the hallmarks of cancer.

The classic hallmarks, first organized by Hanahan and Weinberg in 2000 and expanded since, include: keeping its own growth signals switched on, ignoring the 'stop growing' signals from neighbors, dodging the cell's built-in self-destruct program (apoptosis), gaining the ability to divide endlessly (replicative immortality), persuading the body to grow new blood vessels toward the tumor (angiogenesis), and breaking loose to invade other tissues and spread (metastasis). Later additions include reprogramming how the cell uses energy and evading the immune system. Underlying all of these, two 'enabling' traits — genome instability that breeds new mutations, and inflammation — help the tumor acquire the rest.

The point of the hallmarks is not that every tumor must tick every box, but that they give a shared map of how a cell turns cancerous, no matter which organ it starts in. This matters for treatment: many modern drugs are designed to disable one specific hallmark, such as cutting off the blood supply or reawakening the self-destruct program. A caution: the hallmarks are a useful framework, not a strict law — real tumors are messy, and acquiring these traits happens in different orders and combinations in different cancers.

A drug like bevacizumab targets just one hallmark — angiogenesis — by blocking the signal a tumor uses to recruit new blood vessels. Starved of fresh blood, the tumor's growth slows. This is the practical payoff of thinking in hallmarks: pick one acquired ability the tumor depends on, and attack it specifically.

Many cancer drugs are built to disable one specific hallmark.

The hallmarks are a framework, not a rule: not every tumor shows every trait, and they are acquired in different orders in different cancers.
