Imagine a city where every building is supposed to be torn down and rebuilt on a careful schedule, with inspectors who check each new structure before it is allowed to stand. Your body works the same way: cells grow and divide on a strict timetable so that you heal wounds, replace worn-out tissue, and grow as a child, then mostly stop once a job is done. Cancer is what happens when one cell ignores all the rules, keeps dividing when it should rest, and refuses to stop, until its descendants pile up into a lump or spread where they do not belong.
More precisely, cancer is a disease of the cell cycle — the orderly sequence of growing, copying DNA, and splitting into two cells. Normal cells only divide when they receive 'go' signals from outside, and they pause at built-in checkpoints to repair damage or to wait. In a cancer cell, a series of changes in its DNA jam the accelerator down and break the brakes, so it divides even without proper signals and ignores the checkpoints. Crucially, cancer is not one disease but more than a hundred, all sharing this loss of control over division. It is also not contagious like a cold; it grows out of your own cells.
This view matters because it tells us where cancer comes from and how treatments work. The damaged genes are the same ones that normally control the cell cycle — accelerators called proto-oncogenes and brakes called tumor suppressor genes. A single mutation is rarely enough; cancer usually needs several changes to accumulate in one cell line over years. A common misconception is that cancer cells are foreign invaders. They are not — they are your own cells whose growth controls have failed, which is exactly why cancer can be so hard to fight without harming healthy tissue.
A single skin cell suffers DNA damage from years of sunlight. Its checkpoint that should pause division and call for repair is broken, so it copies its flawed DNA and divides anyway. Over time its offspring gain more changes, divide faster, and form a growth that does not stop when it touches its neighbors — the hallmark of a cell whose cycle controls have failed.
