diffuse endocrine system
The diffuse endocrine system is the body’s “hormone network without an address.” Instead of being packed into discrete glands like the thyroid or adrenal, these hormone-secreting cells are scattered, lone or in small clusters, throughout organs whose main job is something else entirely — the gut, lungs, pancreas, and beyond.
These cells share features with nerve cells: they sense their local environment and respond by releasing peptide hormones and amines. Classic examples include the enteroendocrine cells of the gut lining, hormone cells in the airway lining, and scattered neuroendocrine cells elsewhere. Older literature called them the APUD cells (for a shared biochemical trait), and the concept overlaps heavily with what is now called the diffuse neuroendocrine system.
This scattered design matters in two ways. Physiologically, it lets the body place sensors right where information arises — for instance, gut hormone cells sample food as it passes. Clinically, because these cells are so widespread, neuroendocrine tumors can arise in many organs and may secrete hormones that cause distinctive syndromes.
