Where endocrine signaling is national mail, paracrine signaling is leaning over and whispering to the person at the next desk. A cell releases a messenger that diffuses only a short distance through the tissue fluid and acts on its immediate neighbors — no bloodstream required.
Paracrine signaling is local cell-to-cell communication in which a secreted molecule acts on nearby cells, traveling by diffusion through the interstitial fluid rather than by the blood. Because the message is not diluted across the body and is often broken down quickly, paracrine signals stay local and fade fast — well suited to fine-grained, neighborhood-level coordination.
Endocrine glands rely heavily on paracrine signaling internally. In the pancreatic islets, for instance, somatostatin from delta cells acts on adjacent beta and alpha cells to dampen insulin and glucagon release. A caveat: paracrine and endocrine are not mutually exclusive — the very same molecule can whisper to neighbors and, in other circumstances, be carried by the blood to act far away.
