Standing upright looks like doing nothing, but it is in fact a thousand tiny corrections a minute — your body constantly sensing that it is tipping and quietly nudging itself back. Close your eyes and stand on one foot and you feel that machinery working. After a stroke, an inner-ear problem, a sprained ankle, or simply with age, this silent system frays, and the result is the most dangerous of all rehab problems: falls. Balance and coordination training rebuilds the system that keeps a person upright and moving smoothly.

It rests on a sense most people have never heard of: proprioception, the body's awareness of where its own parts are in space, fed by tiny sensors in muscles, tendons, and joints. Together with vision and the balance organs of the inner ear, proprioception lets the brain know the body is drifting and trigger a correction before a fall. Training challenges this on purpose — standing on a wobble board or foam, narrowing the stance, closing the eyes to remove vision, reaching outside the base of support, walking heel-to-toe — so the nervous system relearns to react faster and more accurately. Coordination training adds smoothness and accuracy to movement, retraining the brain regions (especially the cerebellum) that sequence and fine-tune motion.

This is far more than a gym nicety. A fall can mean a hip fracture, a head injury, a loss of confidence that ends independence. So balance work is central to rehabilitation for stroke, brain injury, Parkinson's disease, vestibular disorders, and frail older adults, and a staple of sports rehab to guard a healed ankle or knee against re-injury. Progress is tracked with simple measures like the Berg Balance Scale or the Timed Up and Go. The key idea is challenge graded just to the edge of safety: a balance that is never threatened never improves, yet a person pushed too far simply falls.

An older woman who fears falling practises standing on a foam pad, first with eyes open and the therapist within arm's reach, then with eyes closed. Removing vision forces her to lean on proprioception and the inner ear, training the very system she had let weaken.

Taking away one sense (vision) forces the others to step up — the core trick of balance training.

Balance is not a single skill: someone steady with eyes open may be very unsteady with eyes closed or on uneven ground. Training must rehearse the specific conditions in which the person actually falls.
