Standing still looks like doing nothing, but it is quietly active work. If you watch closely, a standing person sways slightly all the time, constantly being nudged back toward balance by tiny muscle adjustments. 'Standing still' is really a continuous, automatic correction — the body holding itself up against gravity without you having to think about it.

Two related ideas sit here. Alignment is the static arrangement of the body's segments stacked over one another — head over shoulders over hips over ankles — so that, ideally, gravity passes near the joints and the body is held up with minimal muscle effort. Good alignment is efficient; poor alignment (a slumped or shifted posture) forces some muscles to work overtime and overloads certain joints. Postural control is the dynamic system that keeps you balanced moment to moment: sensors in the eyes, the inner ear's balance organ, and the joints and muscles continuously report your position, and the nervous system replies with small corrective muscle activity, plus larger reactions (an ankle wobble, a hip sway, a protective step) when balance is more seriously challenged. Together, alignment is where you are arranged and postural control is how you keep it.

Posture and balance are central to rehabilitation precisely because they are usually invisible until they fail. Many conditions damage the system: a stroke or inner-ear disorder degrades the sensors and reactions; weakness or pain pushes a body into protective, lopsided alignment; and the well-aligned, efficient posture quietly turns into a tiring, joint-straining one. The honest caveat is that there is no single 'perfect posture' that fits everyone, and the goal is not a rigid ideal but a stable, efficient, adaptable posture — one that costs little energy to hold and can react in time to keep the center of mass over the base of support.

After a stroke a patient sits leaning hard to one side, unaware of it. The inner-ear and limb sensors on the affected side no longer report position well, so postural control cannot pull them back upright — and therapy works on re-teaching the body where 'midline' is, not just on muscle strength.

Standing 'still' is constant invisible correction — when the sensors fail, alignment drifts.

There is no single 'correct' posture for everyone: the aim is a stable, efficient, adaptable alignment that costs little to hold and can react in time, not a rigid textbook ideal.
