When you look up at a star, you are seeing a faint point of light that left its source years, centuries, or millions of years ago. You cannot fly there, scoop up a sample, or run an experiment on it. Astrophysics is the branch of science that takes the same laws of physics we test in laboratories on Earth — gravity, light, heat, the behaviour of atoms and gases — and uses them to figure out what those distant objects are made of, how hot they are, how they move, and how they were born and will die.
More precisely, astrophysics is physics applied to the cosmos. It asks 'why' and 'how' questions: why does a star shine, why does a galaxy hold together, how does a black hole form. It is usually distinguished from observational astronomy, which is the craft of carefully measuring and cataloguing what is in the sky, and from cosmology, which is the study of the universe as a whole — its origin, large-scale structure, and fate. In practice these overlap heavily: an astrophysicist uses observations as evidence and feeds into cosmology, but the defining move of astrophysics is to explain the cosmos with physical law rather than merely describe it.
This matters because almost everything we know about the universe beyond the Solar System comes from light, and astrophysics is what turns that light into understanding. A spectrum of starlight, read through atomic physics, tells us the star's composition, temperature, and speed. The orbit of a galaxy, read through gravity, reveals invisible dark matter. Astrophysics is honest about its limits: we cannot rerun the birth of a star, so we reason from many examples caught at different stages, and we are candid when a result is a model rather than a settled fact.
A 19th-century chemist found that heated sodium gas glows at one exact yellow colour. When astrophysicists later saw that same yellow line in the Sun's spectrum, they concluded — without ever visiting — that the Sun contains sodium. That single leap, applying lab physics to a star, is astrophysics in a nutshell.

Astrophysics is not the same as astrology. Astrology is a belief system claiming stars influence human affairs; astrophysics is an evidence-based science explaining the stars themselves.
