Our everyday sense of distance is built for metres and kilometres — a walk, a drive, a flight. The universe is so much larger than this that ordinary intuition simply breaks down. Cosmic scale is the idea, and the discipline, of grasping just how vast the cosmos is: how the size of a city compares to a planet, a planet to a star, a star to a galaxy, and a galaxy to the whole observable universe.
A walk through the scales makes the gulf concrete. The Earth is about 12,700 km across. The Sun is 1.5 x 10^8 km (about 8 light-minutes) away, so its light takes eight minutes to reach you. The nearest star beyond the Sun is about 4 light-years off — more than 200,000 times the Earth-Sun distance. Our Milky Way galaxy is about 100,000 light-years across and holds a few hundred billion stars; the nearest large galaxy, Andromeda, is 2.5 million light-years away; and the observable universe stretches roughly 46 billion light-years in every direction. Each step up is a leap of a thousand or a million, which is why astronomers think in orders of magnitude rather than plain numbers.
Cosmic scale matters because it forces the special tools the rest of this field is built on. Kilometres are useless for stars, so we invent the light-year and the parsec. Distances cannot be measured with a tape, so we build a cosmic distance ladder of overlapping methods. And because light takes time to cross such gaps, looking far away means looking into the past — a consequence that only makes sense once the sheer scale sinks in.
Shrink the Sun to a marble. On that scale the Earth is a grain of sand about 1 metre away, Neptune is 30 metres off, and the next nearest star is another marble roughly 280 km away — across an entire country of empty space. The universe is mostly nothing.

Diagrams of the Solar System are almost never to scale; if the planets were drawn the right size, they would be invisible specks and the page would be mostly blank. Scale is routinely sacrificed for visibility.
