Distances inside the Solar System are awkward in kilometres — the numbers run to hundreds of millions and billions. So astronomers picked a natural yardstick close to home: the average distance from the Earth to the Sun. They call it one astronomical unit, or AU. It is the ruler tailored to the scale of planets and their orbits.

One AU is defined as exactly 149,597,870,700 metres — about 1.5 x 10^8 km, or roughly 150 million kilometres. Sunlight crosses this gap in about 8 minutes and 20 seconds, so 1 AU is also '8 light-minutes'. The unit makes the Solar System easy to picture: Mercury orbits at about 0.39 AU, Earth at 1 AU by definition, Mars at 1.5 AU, Jupiter at 5.2 AU, and Neptune at about 30 AU. Stating orbits in AU instantly shows their relative sizes without drowning in zeros.

The AU is also the first rung's measuring stick on the cosmic distance ladder. Stellar parallax — the tiny back-and-forth shift of a nearby star as the Earth moves around the Sun — is measured against the baseline of the Earth's orbit, which is 2 AU wide. That is exactly why the parsec, the next unit up, is defined in terms of the AU. Without a precise AU, the entire chain of cosmic distances would have no anchor in the real, measurable Solar System.

A radio command sent from Earth to a spacecraft at Mars, about 1.5 AU away at its nearest, takes roughly 12 to 13 light-minutes one way. That is why rovers cannot be 'driven' live — every instruction is already minutes old when it arrives.

The AU sets the scale of the Solar System and the time-lag of its communications.

1 AU is the average, not a fixed, Earth-Sun distance: the orbit is a slight ellipse, so the real separation varies by a few percent over a year. Since 2012 the AU is fixed by definition to an exact number of metres.
