surface-mount technology (SMT)

Surface-mount technology is the modern way of mounting parts: instead of poking leads through holes, the component sits flat on top of the board and solders directly to pads on the surface. Picture the difference between bolting a sign through a wall versus sticking a tile onto it: SMT parts are tiles on the surface. The parts (called SMDs, surface-mount devices) have no long legs — just small metal end-caps or tiny flat pins — and they land on matching flat pads. This is how essentially all high-volume electronics are built today.

The assembly process is what makes SMT powerful. A stencil smears solder paste (a grey mush of tiny solder balls and flux) onto the pads, a pick-and-place machine sets each part down onto the sticky paste at high speed, and the whole board passes through a reflow oven that melts the paste into solid joints all at once. Because parts mount on the surface with no through-holes, both sides of the board can be populated, components can be far smaller, and a machine can place tens of thousands of parts per hour. SMD passives shrink to specks: an 0402 part is 1.0 by 0.5 mm, smaller than a grain of rice.

Why it matters: SMT gives smaller, cheaper, faster-to-assemble boards with better high-frequency behaviour, because the short terminals add far less parasitic inductance than long leads. That is why your phone is mostly invisible specks. The honest tradeoffs: the tiniest parts are hard or impossible to hand-solder and to rework, fine-pitch chips demand good stencils and reflow control, and inspecting hidden joints under a chip (like a BGA's underside balls) needs X-ray. For prototypes, many designers mix in slightly larger SMD sizes that a steady hand and a fine iron can still manage.

Solder paste is stencilled onto the pads, a machine places an 0603 resistor and a fine-pitch microcontroller onto the paste, and the reflow oven melts everything into joints in one pass. The whole tiny resistor is smaller than the letter 'o' on this page.

Parts sit on the surface and reflow all at once — tiny, cheap, fast, but hard to hand-rework.

Smaller is not always better for you. For a hand-built prototype, choosing 0805 or 0603 passives and avoiding leadless packages like QFN/BGA can be the difference between a board you can assemble and debug, and one only a factory line can touch.
