solder mask
Solder mask is the thin coloured coating — most famously green — that gives a PCB its signature look. Picture the bare copper board as a sheet of food, and the solder mask as cling film stretched over everything except the few spots where you actually want to take a bite. It covers and protects all the copper traces, and deliberately leaves open only the pads where components must be soldered. That is its whole purpose: keep solder where you want it, and keep it off everywhere else.
Here is the mechanism. Molten solder loves to flow across bare copper and will happily bridge two close pads into an accidental short. Solder mask is a tough, non-wettable lacquer (a photo-imageable epoxy) printed over the board; solder simply will not stick to it. So when a wave of solder or a hot reflow oven floods the board, solder beads up only on the exposed copper pads and nowhere else. The mask also shields the fine traces from scratches, dust, moisture, and slow corrosion over the board's life.
Why it matters: without solder mask, hand-soldering a dense board would be a nightmare of bridges, and machine assembly would be impossible. The colour (green, blue, red, black, white) is mostly cosmetic, though dark masks hide traces and white reflects light for LED boards. One honest caveat: solder mask is thin and not perfectly tough — sharp tools scratch it, and the small gap the fab leaves between mask and pad (the mask expansion) is a real design rule. Too little clearance and the mask creeps onto the pad; too much and neighbouring pads risk bridging.
On a finished board the green you see is solder mask over copper; the small shiny silver or gold rectangles poking through are the bare pads it left open for soldering. The mask is exactly why a sloppy iron does not short the whole board together.

Solder mask is an insulator, not a conductor, and it is thin: never rely on it as your only protection at high voltage, and never assume it makes an exposed-but-masked trace safe to touch. Treat it as a soldering aid and a light protective coat, not armour.
