subvisible particles
Subvisible particles are tiny specks suspended in a liquid medicine that are too small for the naked eye to see but big enough to matter. The eye can pick out particles down to roughly 50 micrometres; subvisible particles are smaller than that, often counted in the range of a few up to about 100 micrometres. They are invisible in the vial yet present in numbers that quality and safety standards take seriously, like dust motes you only notice in a shaft of light.
In protein products these particles are largely made of the protein itself: the upper end of the aggregation pathway, where unfolded molecules have clumped into particles. Their importance is twofold. They are a sensitive early warning that the formulation is degrading or being stressed, and proteinaceous particles are suspected to contribute to unwanted immune responses, so regulators treat their number and size as a critical quality attribute to be measured and limited throughout shelf life.
Counting them is harder than it sounds because they span a wide size range and come from several sources — protein aggregates, silicone oil droplets from a syringe, glass or rubber fragments from the container. Different instruments see different things: light obscuration counts particles by how they block light, flow imaging photographs each one to tell a translucent protein clump from a shiny oil droplet, and other methods reach the smallest sizes. Pharmacopoeias set limits for the larger subvisible sizes, while the smaller ones are increasingly characterized too.
An honest caveat: not every subvisible particle is equally concerning, and some background level is unavoidable. The aim is to keep counts low and stable and to understand what the particles are; a rise in count, or a shift toward protein particles, is a red flag worth investigating even when the product still looks clear.
During stability testing, a rise in subvisible particle counts in an antibody vial can signal that the protein is aggregating, prompting a closer look even though the solution still appears clear.

Particles in injectables are roughly tiered: subvisible (below about 50 micrometres, instrument-counted) and visible (above, seen by eye in inspection). Pharmacopoeial particulate-matter limits focus on the larger subvisible sizes, with the smaller protein particles increasingly characterized in development.
