Cholesterol gets a bad reputation from food labels, but it is one of the most important molecules your body makes, and it belongs to a distinctive branch of the lipid family called steroids (or sterols). What sets these lipids apart is their shape: not floppy tails, but a compact, rigid framework of four fused rings.
All steroids share that same four-ring carbon skeleton; they differ only in the small groups attached around the edges, and those small differences hand each one a completely different job. Cholesterol is the parent molecule. Tucked among the phospholipids of an animal cell membrane, it acts like a spacer that keeps the membrane from becoming either too stiff or too runny as temperature changes — a fluidity regulator. Cholesterol is also the raw material from which the body manufactures steroid hormones, including sex hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, and vitamin D.
So the same rigid ring system that worries people on a nutrition label is quietly doing essential work in every cell. The health concern is not cholesterol itself but how much accumulates in the bloodstream and where; your body needs it so much that it makes its own supply regardless of diet.
