Every living cell is wrapped in a thin, flexible skin called the plasma membrane. Picture a soap bubble made of fat instead of soap: it is so thin you would never see it with your eyes, yet it is the wall that decides what counts as inside the cell and what counts as the outside world. Without it, the busy soup of molecules a cell needs to live would simply leak away and dissolve into its surroundings.

The plasma membrane is built mainly from two back-to-back sheets of fat-like molecules called phospholipids, with many different proteins floating in and through them. Its most important job is to be a gatekeeper: it lets some things pass freely, blocks others completely, and pumps a few in or out against their natural flow. This careful control of traffic is what keeps the inside of a cell different from the outside, which is the basic condition for staying alive.

Because it is the boundary of the cell, the plasma membrane is also where the cell talks to the world. Proteins embedded in it sense chemical signals, recognise neighbouring cells, grab onto nutrients, and let the cell respond to its environment. Damage the membrane badly and the cell dies almost at once, which is why many poisons, soaps, and freezing injuries do their harm by tearing this delicate film.

When you wash greasy dishes, soap dissolves the fat. The same thing happens to a cell touched by soap: its fatty membrane breaks apart and the cell spills open and dies.

The cell's boundary is made of fat — which is exactly why soap can destroy it.

The plasma membrane is not a solid wall but a moving, self-healing fluid; small tears can re-seal on their own because the fatty molecules naturally crowd back together.
