When a drug is a powder in a bottle, it is not just one thing — it is one of many possible solid forms. Solid form is the umbrella idea covering the actual physical state the molecules are locked into: orderly crystal or disordered glass, pure substance or salt, dry or water-containing. Like the difference between ice, snow, and frost made of the same water, these forms are the same chemical but behave differently.
The landscape of solid forms includes crystalline polymorphs, amorphous material, salts with counterions, cocrystals with coformers, and hydrates or solvates that capture water or solvent. Each occupies a different point in energy and structure, giving it its own solubility, dissolution rate, stability, density, and mechanical behavior. Mapping all the accessible forms of a candidate, called solid-form screening, is a standard early step in development.
Selecting the right solid form is a balancing act, because the form that dissolves best is often the least stable, and the most stable form may dissolve too slowly. Whatever form is chosen must be reproducibly manufacturable and must not convert to another form during processing or storage. Because a specific solid form can be patented and is tied to a product's regulatory identity, the choice carries commercial and legal weight as well as scientific.
