Shapley-Curtis debate

In 1920 two astronomers stood up in a Washington museum and argued, in front of an audience, about how big the universe is. The whole quarrel came down to a simple-sounding question: are the faint, fuzzy 'spiral nebulae' scattered across the sky small clouds inside our own Milky Way, or are they whole separate galaxies — 'island universes' — lying unimaginably far beyond it? This famous confrontation is now remembered as the Great Debate.
Harlow Shapley argued that the Milky Way was enormous and that it was essentially the entire universe, with the spiral nebulae just nearby gas clouds. Heber Curtis argued the opposite: the Milky Way was smaller, and the spiral nebulae were far-off galaxies in their own right, each a Milky Way of its own. Each man was right about some things and wrong about others. Shapley correctly placed the Sun far from the galaxy's center using globular clusters, but badly overestimated the Milky Way's size; Curtis correctly read the spirals as external galaxies but underestimated our galaxy. The debate could not be settled that night because nobody yet had a reliable distance to a single spiral.
The argument matters because it framed the exact question whose answer would multiply the known universe by a factor of millions. Within a few years Edwin Hubble resolved it decisively by finding Cepheid variable stars in the Andromeda nebula and measuring their distance, proving the spirals lie far outside the Milky Way. The Great Debate is a clean example of how science advances: a sharp, testable disagreement that the right measurement later resolves, with neither side wholly right.
The Andromeda 'nebula' was the crux: if it lay inside the Milky Way, Shapley was right; if it lay millions of light-years beyond, Curtis was right. In 1925 Hubble's Cepheid distance to Andromeda — far outside any plausible Milky Way — handed the victory to the island-universe view.
One missing measurement — a distance — was all that stood between two pictures of the cosmos.
It is a myth that one side simply 'won' the night. The debate ended unresolved; only Hubble's later Cepheid distances settled it, and even then both Shapley and Curtis had each been partly right.
