Milky Way

On a truly dark night, far from city lights, a faint band of misty light arches across the whole sky. For thousands of years people called it the Milky Way and told stories about it — spilt milk, a river of light, a road for the dead. When Galileo turned the first telescope on it in 1609 the mystery dissolved: the milky glow broke apart into countless individual stars, too faint and too crowded for the naked eye to separate. That band is the Milky Way galaxy seen edge-on from the inside — we live within it, and we are looking out through its flattened disk of stars.

The Milky Way is a vast, rotating system of roughly 100 to 400 billion stars, plus gas, dust, and a great unseen halo of dark matter, all bound together by gravity. It is shaped like a thin disk about 100,000 light-years across but only about 1,000 light-years thick, with a bulge of older stars at the center and graceful spiral arms wound through the disk. The Sun is an ordinary star roughly 26,000 light-years out from the center, riding around the galaxy once every 230 million years or so. When you look at the bright band in the sky, you are seeing the disk stretched out flat; when you look away from it, you are looking out the top or bottom of the disk into emptier sky.

Studying the Milky Way is both a great advantage and a great frustration. We are inside it, so we can see individual stars, gas clouds, and star clusters in extraordinary detail — far more than in any distant galaxy. But being inside also means we can never step back and photograph the whole thing from outside; every map of its shape is pieced together from measurements taken from our one fixed vantage point, and thick dust blocks our view toward the center in ordinary visible light. A common misconception is that the Milky Way is the whole universe. It is one galaxy among hundreds of billions, a single island of stars in a far larger cosmic ocean.

The very name carries a lesson in scale. 'Galaxy' comes from the Greek word for milk, gala, because to the Greeks the band was milky. We now know that one such milky band is a system 100,000 light-years wide — and that the faint smudge we call Andromeda is another whole Milky Way, 2.5 million light-years away.

The band in the sky is our own galaxy's disk, seen edge-on from a seat inside it.

The Milky Way is one galaxy, not the universe, and not 'the cosmos.' It is also not the only thing we can see with the naked eye — Andromeda and the Magellanic Clouds are separate galaxies visible without a telescope.
