Secure Neural Telemetry & Encryption
The cryptographic protection of the wireless link between an implant or wearable and its external controller: confidentiality (encryption) so intercepted telemetry is unreadable, integrity and authentication so commands and data cannot be forged or replayed, and availability against jamming. The lesson from implantable cardiac devices — that unauthenticated wireless control is exploitable — applies directly, and more seriously, to neural stimulators.
The hard part is doing this within the power, heat, and area budget of a chronically implanted device, and provisioning keys for a device that must also be accessible to clinicians in an emergency. Lightweight ciphers, hardware crypto accelerators, proximity- or body-coupled key exchange, and fail-safe access modes are active engineering responses; the design must jointly satisfy security and clinical safety.
