releasing hormone
A releasing hormone is a chemical command sent from the hypothalamus to the pituitary gland telling it to secrete a particular hormone. Think of the hypothalamus as a control room and the releasing hormone as a short, urgent memo: it travels a tiny distance and switches on a specific output downstream. These hormones are how the brain converts neural information into endocrine action.
Releasing hormones reach the anterior pituitary through a dedicated set of small blood vessels, the hypophyseal portal system, which delivers them in high concentration without diluting them in the whole circulation. Each one targets specific pituitary cells: GnRH triggers LH and FSH, TRH triggers TSH (and prolactin), CRH triggers ACTH, and GHRH triggers growth hormone.
Because they sit at the top of their axes, releasing hormones are commonly used as diagnostic and therapeutic tools. A synthetic releasing hormone can be given as a stimulation test to see whether the pituitary can respond, and long-acting GnRH analogs are used clinically to manipulate the reproductive axis. Importantly, the pituitary's response to many releasing hormones depends on their being delivered in pulses rather than continuously.
