hypophyseal portal system
The hypophyseal portal system is a clever bit of plumbing that lets the hypothalamus whisper directly to the anterior pituitary without shouting through the whole body. Instead of dumping its hormones into the general circulation, the hypothalamus pours them into a short, private set of blood vessels that runs straight down to the pituitary.
A “portal system” is any arrangement where blood passes through two capillary beds in series, connected by a vein, before returning to the heart. Here, a first capillary network in the lower hypothalamus picks up releasing and inhibiting hormones; small portal veins carry that blood down the pituitary stalk; then a second capillary network in the anterior pituitary delivers the hormones directly to their target cells.
This design has two big advantages. First, the hypothalamic hormones reach the pituitary in high concentration before being diluted by the rest of the bloodstream, so very small amounts are effective. Second, the route is fast and targeted, allowing rapid, finely tuned control of pituitary output.
If the pituitary stalk is cut or damaged, this portal link is broken. Anterior pituitary hormones then fall — except prolactin, which often rises, because the constant inhibitory dopamine signal from the hypothalamus can no longer reach it.
The portal system serves only the anterior pituitary. The posterior pituitary, by contrast, is supplied directly by hypothalamic axons, not by this portal route.
