A reference range is the band of values that counts as 'normal' for a hormone, printed alongside the result so a number can be judged at a glance. It is the yardstick that turns a bare measurement into something interpretable: 12 means little until you know that healthy people usually fall between, say, 8 and 20.

Most reference ranges are built statistically by measuring a hormone in a large group of healthy volunteers and keeping the central 95 percent of their values — the middle stretch, excluding the lowest and highest 2.5 percent. This convention has a built-in consequence: by definition, 1 in 20 perfectly healthy people will land outside the range, so a slightly out-of-range value is not automatically disease.

Endocrine reference ranges often depend on context. Many shift with age, sex, pregnancy, time of day, and even the specific assay and instrument used, so the same hormone can have different 'normal' figures in different labs. The most useful ranges are therefore population-specific, and for some hormones a single normal interval is replaced by a target that depends on the clinical situation rather than on a healthy-volunteer survey.

Pregnancy is the classic case where ordinary ranges mislead: thyroid hormone and binding proteins rise so much that trimester-specific reference ranges are needed to interpret a pregnant woman's thyroid tests correctly.
