Pulmonary rehabilitation is a structured program of supervised exercise plus education and support, designed to help people with chronic lung disease do more with the lung function they have. Rather than changing the lungs themselves, it retrains the whole body and the breathing habits around them so daily life feels less limited.
A typical course runs for several weeks and combines tailored aerobic and strength training with breathing techniques, advice on managing symptoms, medication and inhaler coaching, nutrition guidance, and emotional support. The exercise breaks a vicious cycle: breathlessness leads people to move less, which weakens muscles, which makes them even more breathless. Conditioning the muscles reduces the oxygen they demand for a given task, so the same activity provokes less shortness of breath.
Evidence consistently shows that rehabilitation improves exercise capacity, reduces breathlessness, lifts quality of life, and after a COPD flare-up can reduce hospital readmissions. It works best for motivated, stable patients and complements medication; it does not replace inhalers or oxygen, and its gains gradually fade without ongoing activity.
After a COPD admission, a patient joins an eight-week program of twice-weekly supervised exercise and learns pursed-lip breathing to control breathlessness when climbing stairs.

Although best established in COPD, pulmonary rehabilitation also benefits people with interstitial lung disease, bronchiectasis, and other chronic respiratory conditions.
