The placenta is the temporary organ that a mother and her unborn baby build together, like a shared docking station where oxygen, nutrients and waste pass between two separate bloodstreams without them ever directly mixing. It is also, surprisingly, one of the body's most powerful hormone factories during pregnancy.

Beyond its transport role, the placenta acts as a major endocrine gland. It secretes human chorionic gonadotropin to maintain the early corpus luteum, then takes over production of large amounts of progesterone and estrogens (especially estriol) to sustain the pregnancy. It also makes human placental lactogen, which reshapes the mother's metabolism, and a range of other peptides and steroids that influence growth, blood flow and the timing of birth.

Crucially, the placenta is not a self-contained chemist. For estrogen synthesis it relies on precursor molecules supplied by the fetal adrenal glands and liver, an arrangement called the fetal-placental unit. This cooperation means placental and fetal endocrine functions are deeply intertwined.

A caveat worth remembering: the placenta is generally a partial barrier, not a perfect one. Many hormones, drugs, antibodies and infectious agents can cross it to varying degrees, which is why maternal endocrine and metabolic conditions can directly affect the developing fetus.

The placenta lacks the enzyme needed to make the steroid precursor it requires for estrogen, so it borrows that step from the fetus, while the fetus lacks an enzyme the placenta has, making the two functionally interdependent.
