fetal-placental unit
The fetal-placental unit is the idea that, for some hormone-making jobs, the fetus and placenta function as a single team rather than two separate organs. Picture an assembly line that runs through both factories: neither can finish the product alone, but together they build it perfectly.
The classic example is estrogen production. The placenta is rich in some steroid-making enzymes but lacks others; the fetus has the enzymes the placenta is missing. So precursors shuttle back and forth: the fetal adrenal glands make a steroid building block, the fetal liver modifies it, and the placenta finishes converting it into estrogens such as estriol. The placenta supplies the fetus with progesterone-derived precursors in return.
Because the final hormone output depends on both partners, measuring products like estriol was historically used as an indirect window onto fetal wellbeing: a healthy, growing fetus means a healthy fetal contribution to the unit.
A caveat: the concept is a useful model, not a literal merger. Maternal tissues also contribute substrates, and modern fetal monitoring relies more on imaging and direct assessment than on hormone levels, so the fetal-placental unit is most valuable as a framework for understanding pregnancy steroidogenesis.
