surfactant
A surfactant is a molecule that cannot decide whether it loves water or oil, so it parks itself at the boundary between them. Soap is the everyday example: it lets greasy dirt mix with rinse water that would otherwise repel it. The name is a contraction of surface-active agent.
Each surfactant molecule has two parts: a water-loving (hydrophilic) head and an oil-loving (lipophilic) tail. This dual nature drives it to accumulate at surfaces and interfaces, with the head dipping into the water and the tail sticking into the air or oil. By occupying the interface, the surfactant disrupts the unbalanced molecular forces that cause surface or interfacial tension, lowering it markedly. Surfactants are classified by head-group charge as anionic, cationic, nonionic, or amphoteric (zwitterionic).
In pharmaceutics surfactants are workhorses: they wet hydrophobic drug powders, stabilise emulsions and suspensions, solubilise poorly soluble drugs inside micelles, and reduce foaming or generate it where wanted. Common pharmaceutical examples include polysorbates (Tween), sorbitan esters (Span), sodium lauryl sulfate, and lecithin. A caveat is that many surfactants can irritate tissue or lyse cells at higher concentrations, so the choice and amount are constrained by the route of administration.
