hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB)

Imagine rating every surfactant on a scale from oil-lover to water-lover. The hydrophilic-lipophilic balance, or HLB, is exactly that: a single number, usually from 0 to about 20, that tells you whether a surfactant leans toward oil or toward water, and therefore what job it is good for.

The number reflects the relative weight of the water-loving head versus the oil-loving tail in the molecule. Low values (around 3-6) mark oil-soluble surfactants suited to making water-in-oil emulsions; high values (around 8-18) mark water-soluble ones suited to oil-in-water emulsions, with wetting agents around 7-9 and solubilisers above 15. Originally devised by William Griffin for nonionic surfactants, the scale lets formulators predict function before testing.

A practical strength of HLB is that values are roughly additive, so two surfactants can be blended to hit a target value, and many oils have a known required HLB for stable emulsification. The honest caveats are that HLB ignores temperature, concentration, and the structure of the oil phase, so it is a useful starting guide rather than a guarantee; nonionic systems are also better described by their phase-inversion temperature in some cases.

As a rough guide: HLB 3-6 favours water-in-oil emulsions, 7-9 favours wetting, 8-18 favours oil-in-water emulsions, and above 15 favours solubilisation.
