A child who cannot sit, stand, walk, or talk on her own still needs to do what every child does: sit upright to see the world, get around to explore it, play, and communicate. Pediatric seating and assistive technology is the equipment that makes those things possible — the supportive seating that holds a child in a good position, and the wider family of tools (wheelchairs, walkers, standers, communication devices, switches, and adapted toys) that substitute for or boost a function the child lacks.

Seating is the heart of it. A well-built seating system supports the pelvis, trunk, and head so a child is stable, comfortable, and aligned — which, far from being merely comfortable, lets the hands come free for play and learning, makes breathing and swallowing easier, and helps prevent the spine from collapsing or the hips from dislocating as the child grows. Around this sit the other technologies: powered mobility so a toddler who cannot crawl can still drive off to explore (which itself spurs development), augmentative and alternative communication so a non-speaking child has a voice, and simple switches that let a profoundly disabled child cause an effect in the world. Each is matched to the individual child through assessment.

Two ideas make paediatric equipment distinct from adult equipment. First, children grow, so a seating system or wheelchair is never a one-time purchase — it must adjust and be replaced as the body changes, and provision has to keep pace. Second, the goal is development and participation, not just transport or posture: the right device at the right age opens up play, school, and independence during the years that shape the child. The honest caveat is that equipment is a tool, not an end — poorly fitted seating can actually cause harm (pressure sores, worsening deformity), and the best device is the one matched to this child's goals and re-checked as she grows.

A three-year-old with severe cerebral palsy gets a custom-moulded seat that holds her trunk and head steady. Suddenly her hands are free to use a switch-activated toy and a simple communication device, and a power chair lets her drive to her toys. The seating is reviewed and adjusted every few months as she grows.

Good seating frees the hands and protects the body; equipment must be re-fitted as the child grows.
