Sensing-enabled implantable pulse generator
An implanted stimulator that can also record local field potentials from its own electrodes and log or stream them chronically, closing the loop between sensing and stimulation in an ambulatory patient. Commercial sensing neurostimulators and research-grade bidirectional systems have made it possible to record biomarkers at home over months, capturing naturalistic symptom fluctuations that brief inpatient recording sessions miss.
This chronic, real-world data is the substrate for discovering affective-state biomarkers and for building and testing adaptive controllers. On-device sensing is constrained, however: it must contend with stimulation artifact contaminating the recording, limited on-board bandwidth and channel count, telemetry and storage limits, and battery life, all of which shape which biomarkers can actually be sensed continuously outside the lab.
Recording during stimulation is technically hard because the stimulus pulse is orders of magnitude larger than the neural signal; artifact rejection and careful choice of sensing versus stimulating contacts are essential.
