irregular galaxy

Not every galaxy is a tidy pinwheel or a smooth oval. Some are lumpy, chaotic, asymmetric patches of stars and glowing gas with no bulge, no clean disk, and no organized arms — like a splatter rather than a portrait. These misfits, which refuse to sit on the Hubble tuning fork, are called irregular galaxies.

Irregulars are typically small and rich in cold gas, and they often blaze with knots of bright blue young stars, because their generous gas supply keeps making new stars even though nothing organizes them into a pattern. They tend to be low in heavy elements (low metallicity), which can make them resemble what young galaxies in the early universe may have looked like. Astronomers loosely split them into Irr I, which still show hints of structure, and Irr II, which are utterly chaotic. Their messy shapes often come from gravitational tugs by larger neighbors or from past collisions and mergers that scrambled any orderly form.

Irregulars matter both as the most common kind of galaxy by number — dwarf irregulars vastly outnumber giant spirals — and as nearby laboratories for star formation in gas-rich, low-metal conditions. The two Magellanic Clouds, satellites of the Milky Way visible to the naked eye from the southern sky, are classic irregulars, distorted by the Milky Way's gravity yet still busily forming stars. They give us a close-up view of galaxies that look unfinished or freshly disturbed.
