intra-aortic balloon pump
Imagine a helper who gives the heart a perfectly timed push and pull: squeezing extra blood toward the heart’s own arteries right after each beat, then easing the load just before the next beat so the heart works less hard. An intra-aortic balloon pump is a temporary device that does exactly this rhythmic timing inside the aorta.
A long balloon on a catheter is placed in the aorta, the body’s main artery, just past the heart. Synchronized to the heartbeat, it inflates in diastole (when the heart relaxes) to drive more blood into the coronary arteries, and rapidly deflates in systole (just as the heart ejects), creating a suction that lowers the pressure the heart must pump against. The net effect is better coronary blood supply and less work for a struggling heart.
The balloon pump is used temporarily in serious situations such as cardiogenic shock, to support a patient before or after heart surgery, or as a bridge while definitive treatment is arranged. It assists rather than replaces the heart’s pumping, providing only modest support; in profound pump failure a more powerful device such as a ventricular assist device or ECMO may be needed.
