cardiogenic shock
If heart failure is a weakening pump, cardiogenic shock is the pump failing so severely that the whole house loses water pressure at once. The heart can no longer push enough blood to keep the body's organs supplied, and without rapid help, tissues begin to starve of oxygen and shut down.
Cardiogenic shock is a state of inadequate organ perfusion caused by primary cardiac failure, despite adequate or high filling pressures. Clinically it shows as low blood pressure, cold and clammy skin, reduced urine output, confusion, and rising blood lactate as tissues switch to oxygen-starved metabolism. The most common cause is a large heart attack damaging the left ventricle, but it can also follow advanced chronic heart failure, severe valve problems, arrhythmias, or massive pulmonary embolism.
It is a life-threatening emergency with high mortality. Care is delivered in intensive settings and aims to restore perfusion: treating the cause (such as opening a blocked coronary artery), supporting the circulation with medications that raise blood pressure or boost contraction, and sometimes using mechanical support such as an intra-aortic balloon pump or a ventricular assist device. Despite modern care, outcomes remain serious, which is why speed and an organized team approach matter.
