Bit-error rate (BER)
Bit-error rate is the report card of a serial link: out of all the bits you sent, what fraction arrived flipped? A BER of 1e-12 means one mistake per trillion bits — which sounds tiny, but at 32 Gb/s that's one error every 30 seconds, and across a data centre of millions of lanes it's a constant drizzle of corruption that error-correcting codes must mop up. Think of it as the typo rate of a typist who never sleeps and types billions of characters a second.
BER is dominated by how far the eye is open versus how much noise and jitter try to close it: more margin means exponentially fewer errors. Engineers measure it with a BER tester that sends a known pseudo-random pattern and counts mismatches, and they visualize the margin with a 'bathtub curve' — BER plotted versus sampling position, flat-low in the open middle and rising steeply at the edges. Because catching a 1e-15 error directly would take hours, the curve is extrapolated; and because raw BER at 100+ Gb/s can be as bad as 1e-4, forward error correction is now mandatory to reach the 1e-15 the system actually needs.
Don't confuse raw BER (before FEC) with post-FEC BER: a modern PAM4 link may run at a scary 1e-4 raw and rely entirely on Reed-Solomon FEC to deliver an effective 1e-15.
