Fully implantable neural system

A fully implantable neural system integrates electrodes, front-end ASIC, power, telemetry and a hermetic package into a single sealed, leadless device with no wires crossing the skin. It is the engineering endpoint for chronic clinical BCI, precisely because the percutaneous connector of a tethered lab system is the dominant infection and mechanical-failure risk. Achieving it forces every earlier term in this field to be solved together, since power, data rate, compression, heating and packaging longevity all trade against one another in one object.

Representative systems mark the path. WIMAGINE (Clinatec) is a wireless epidural 64-channel recorder; the Neuralink N1 targets on the order of a thousand channels with inductive charging and a Bluetooth link; WAND demonstrated closed-loop combined sensing and stimulation; and NeuroPace RNS is an approved, fully implanted closed-loop responsive stimulator, showing that self-contained sense-and-stimulate devices can clear regulation.

The distinction from tethered systems is not cosmetic. A percutaneous pedestal like the Utah array's gives essentially unlimited bandwidth and power at the cost of an open skin interface; a fully implantable system accepts hard power and data-rate ceilings in exchange for the sealed, connector-free reliability that chronic human use demands. Most current high-performance human intracortical results still use tethered systems, so closing this gap is an active frontier.
