Most splints hold a part still. A dynamic splint does the opposite: it carries a gentle, continuous moving force. Imagine a soft glove-like brace on a stiff hand with little elastic loops tugging each finger toward open all day long, or a tiny spring at the wrist that keeps nudging a dropped wrist back up. A dynamic splint is a hand or limb orthosis with a built-in elastic, spring, or rubber-band component that applies a small, ongoing pull to assist or restore a motion.
It works through gentle, prolonged tension rather than a hard hold. To regain motion lost to a stiff joint, a dynamic splint applies a low, steady stretch for hours — tissue gradually lengthens far better under long, light pressure than under a brief, hard yank, which only triggers guarding and pain. To assist a weak movement, the spring does part of the work the muscle cannot: a finger-extension splint helps the fingers open after the muscles release, so the hand can repeatedly open and close in useful activity rather than staying clenched.
Dynamic splints earn their keep after hand surgery, in burn rehabilitation where scar relentlessly pulls tissue tight, after tendon repairs, and in nerve injuries with weak but recovering muscle. They are more involved than static splints and demand a careful wearing schedule and frequent skin checks, because constant tension over a small area can rub or pressure the skin. The force must stay low: too much pull does not speed recovery — it inflames the tissue and can make stiffness worse, the classic beginner mistake of treating gentle persistence as if more force were better.
After hand surgery, a man's index finger keeps stiffening into a bent position. A dynamic splint with a light elastic loop draws the finger gently toward straight for several hours a day; over weeks the joint gradually regains its range, while a single hard stretch would only have hurt and resisted.
A built-in spring or elastic applies a gentle, prolonged pull — low force over long time, not a hard yank.
More pull is not better. Excess tension inflames tissue and can worsen stiffness; the principle is low force applied over long periods, with frequent skin checks.
