Degrees-of-freedom control

The number of degrees of freedom (DOF) is the count of independent movement dimensions a BCI simultaneously controls: a 2-D cursor is two DOF, a 3-D reach is three, a reach-plus-orientation-plus-grasp arm is seven, and adding hand posture pushes toward ten or more. DOF is the most direct measure of how much a motor BCI can do, and scaling it is a central engineering axis of the field. Each added dimension must be extracted from the same finite, noisy population, so DOF trades off against per-dimension accuracy.

Two practical distinctions matter. First, simultaneous versus sequential control: controlling many DOF at once is far harder than switching among them one or two at a time, and many systems fake high DOF by mode-switching. Second, effective versus nominal DOF: an arm may have ten actuators, but if shared control or coupling means the user independently commands only three, the effective neural DOF is three. Honest reporting distinguishes the dimensions the brain actually specifies from those the machine fills in.
