Two snowflakes can share the same internal ice structure yet look completely different — one a needle, one a flat plate. Crystal habit is that outward shape: the external form a crystal takes as it grows, even when the underlying lattice is identical. Common habits include needles, plates, prisms, blades and equant (roughly cubic) crystals.

Habit is governed by how fast different crystal faces grow during crystallization, which depends on the solvent, temperature, supersaturation and impurities. Unlike polymorphism, a change of habit does not change the internal crystal structure or the chemical identity — only the shape and surface area presented to the world.

In pharmaceutics, habit quietly controls processability. Long thin needles flow poorly, trap air, resist uniform packing and can break during compression, while compact equant crystals flow and compress well. Plate-like crystals may show preferred orientation that confuses X-ray analysis. Because habit affects bulk density, flow, filtration and even dissolution surface area, crystallization is often deliberately tuned to favor a workable shape.
