When you walk, you do not consciously fire each leg muscle in turn — left, right, left, right. The rhythm runs almost by itself, the way you can breathe or chew without thinking. Hidden in the spinal cord are circuits that can crank out these repeating, alternating patterns on their own, like a built-in metronome for movement. These are central pattern generators.
A central pattern generator is a network of spinal cord neurons wired so that they produce a rhythmic, alternating output — flexors then extensors, one leg then the other — even without a constant stream of commands from the brain. The brain and sensory feedback do not create the rhythm; they switch it on, set its speed, and steer it. The classic evidence comes from animals whose spinal cords were separated from the brain yet whose legs still stepped on a moving treadmill when supported. In humans the case is less absolute, but spinal circuits clearly contribute to the basic stepping rhythm of walking.
This idea is the scientific backbone of several rehabilitation approaches after spinal cord injury and stroke. If the spinal cord can still generate a stepping pattern, then loading the legs and moving them through a walking rhythm — for instance with body-weight-supported treadmill training — may help reawaken and shape that pattern, rather than relying only on commands from a damaged brain. The honest caveat is that human results are modest and not guaranteed; central pattern generators are a real and useful principle, not a magic switch that restores walking.
In a body-weight-supported treadmill program, a partly paralysed patient is held upright in a harness while therapists guide his legs through a stepping rhythm; the repeated loading and motion aim to engage the spinal stepping circuits, not just the weakened pathways from the brain.

Their role in humans is real but more limited and supervised than in cats and other animals; do not expect a CPG to restore independent walking on its own, and human evidence for treadmill methods is mixed.
