Cement is the grey powder that, mixed with water, sets into an artificial stone, the glue that holds concrete together and the most-used manufactured material on Earth. The everyday confusion is worth clearing up first: cement is just the binding powder; concrete is the finished rock you get when cement paste glues sand and gravel into one mass. Cement is to concrete what flour is to bread.

The common kind, Portland cement, is made by roasting limestone and clay together near 1450 degrees C into hard nodules called clinker, then grinding that clinker to a fine powder. The remarkable part is what happens when you add water: the powder does not simply dry out, it chemically reacts with the water (a process called hydration) and grows a dense interlocking mesh of new crystals that binds everything into a rigid solid. Because it sets by reacting with water rather than by drying, it will even harden underwater, which is why it is called a hydraulic cement. The setting takes hours, but strength keeps climbing for weeks as the reaction continues.

The resulting concrete behaves exactly like the ceramic it is: strong in compression but weak in tension, roughly ten times stronger squeezed than stretched, and brittle, cracking with little warning. That is why real structures embed steel bars (rebar) in the concrete, letting the steel carry the tension the concrete cannot, a classic composite where each material covers the other's weakness. Making cement is also a major source of carbon dioxide, both from the fuel and from the limestone itself releasing CO2 when roasted, which is why lower-carbon cements are an active field.

Roast limestone and clay to clinker, grind it, add water and it hydrates into interlocking crystals; the resulting concrete is about ten times stronger in compression than in tension, so we add steel rebar.

Cement is the binding powder; concrete is the composite rock, strong squeezed, weak stretched.

Cement is not concrete: cement is the powder, concrete is cement paste plus sand and gravel. And cement sets by reacting with water (hydration), not by drying out, so it hardens even underwater.
