Think of snapping a dry cracker, a pane of glass, or a stick of blackboard chalk. There is no stretching, no warning — one moment it is whole, the next it is in two pieces, often with a sharp crack. That is brittle fracture: the material breaks with almost no plastic deformation, and a crack, once started, races through it at close to the speed of sound.

Because there is little or no yielding, brittle fracture takes very little energy and the two surfaces fit back together almost perfectly (no material was used up necking). The crack usually travels straight across the grains (transgranular cleavage), splitting them along weak crystal planes; under a microscope this leaves flat, shiny facets and fan-like river patterns that point back to where the crack began. Sometimes it runs along the grain boundaries instead (intergranular), if those have been weakened by impurities. On a larger scale, chevron or V-shaped marks aim like arrows back at the origin.

Brittle fracture is dangerous precisely because it gives no warning and needs little energy — a small overload or a hidden flaw can trigger sudden, total failure. Ceramics and glass are brittle at all normal temperatures; ordinary steels can turn brittle when cold, loaded fast, or notched (see the ductile-to-brittle transition). Famous disasters — the Liberty ships cracking in half in cold seas, the Titanic's hull steel — were brittle fractures of metal that would have been ductile in warmer, slower conditions.

A ship's steel plate that is tough and bendable in summer can shatter like glass on a freezing night if a crack starts at a sharp hatch corner. Several World War II Liberty ships literally broke in two at dockside in cold water, launching the whole field of fracture mechanics.

Brittleness is not only a property of ceramics. A normally ductile steel can fail in a brittle way if the temperature is low enough, the loading fast enough, or the notch sharp enough — the three classic triggers.
